Legal-expenses insurance
Insurance covering the cost of legal assistance — such as lawyer and expert fees — when recovering personal-injury damage from a liable party.
Legal-expenses insurance
Legal-expenses insurance is insurance under which the insurer bears the cost of legal assistance for the insured. In personal-injury practice it is used when someone has suffered damage through another's conduct and needs legal assistance to obtain compensation. The legal basis is in Articles 7:940–7:944 BW, which set specific rules on free choice of lawyer and the handling of disputes.

Practical consequences
For injury victims, legal-expenses insurance offers low-threshold access to legal help without having to advance costs. Still, it is wise to check whether the policy explicitly covers personal injury and what the maximum is, as complex injury cases can exceed the cover limit. In that case a specialised personal-injury lawyer can additionally be engaged on a 'no cure no pay' basis.
“After the traffic accident the injured party engaged her legal-expenses insurer, which appointed a personal-injury jurist to recover the damage from the party at fault.”
